The Weekend Read for January 29th - Guitar Articles and More

Another hot week for the Rock House Blog Roll. There were some great articles from our blogroll on guitar lessons, gear reviews and philosophy.

I did write and post the usual articles that go into The Rock House Blog every week. If you're looking for a good guitar lesson from us this week I posted one from John McCarthy titled "Rhythm Guitar Lesson with Backing Tracks", Marc Rizzo released his new solo CD "Marc Rizzo's New CD Legionnaire Released on-line" and and Alex Skolnick posted updates on what's going on in his world "Alex Skolnick Updates"

Taylor Guitar T3 Wins Product of the Year

Press Release

At the annual National Association of Music Merchants trade show (NAMM) in Anaheim, California (January 14-17), the Taylor T3 was awarded the “Product of the Year” by The Music and Sound Retailer magazine.

Brian Berk, editor of the magazine, presented company co-founder Bob Taylor with the award among a group of Taylor team members. “Although a difficult time for many, 2009 was a year of great product introductions,” Berk said. “Our readers have spoken to say Taylor’s T3 is at the top of the class. The award is voted on by retailers only, not an editorial staff, making the honor even more special. We congratulate Taylor’s T3 for winning our 2009 Product of the Year.”

The semihollow T3 and its Bigsby-equipped counterpart, the T3/B, was introduced at Winter NAMM 2009 and has since gone on to receive rave reviews and accolades from both the media and public.

The T3 features an expertly crafted body of sapele, topped with quilted maple. A neck of tropical American mahogany sports heftier fret wire for a truly electric feel, while brilliant chrome hardware adorns the T3 for a ready-to-rock look that screams electric, vintage and cool.

While the T3 offers plenty for any player on its own, the designers at Taylor decided to take the new line up a notch in a variation, the T3/B. Marking a first for the company, the T3/B includes an authentic Bigsby vibrato (model B70) paired with a roller bridge for high performance, giving players the freedom to set the intonation of each string, and eliminating the “dragging string” sound so commonly found in fixed bridges. The standard T3 model comes with a stop tailpiece.

The T3 features Taylor’s high definition (HD) humbuckers, which are specially positioned to capture the T3’s fidelity and range of tones. A three-way switch covers three standard pickup configurations, and as an added twist, a coil-splitting function is activated for both humbuckers by pulling up on the volume knob, opening the door to a palette of single coil sounds.

The T3 and T3/B are offered in four colors: Natural, Ruby Red Burst, Black and Translucent Orange, with tobacco or honey sunburst options also available. Strung with Elixir light gauge electric strings with NANOWEB® coating, the T3 comes ready to gig in a Taylor hardshell case.

Music Retailers Vote Peavey Vypyr 'Amp of the Year' for Second Year

Press Release

PEAVEY INT'L. HEADQUARTERS — For the second year, music-product retailers voted Peavey's innovative Vypyr™ Series modeling guitar amplifiers the Amplifier Line of the Year in Musical Merchandise Review (MMR) magazine's annual Dealers' Choice Awards.

"The response to the Peavey Vypyr modeling amplifiers has been overwhelmingly positive, from music retailers to guitar players," said Hartley Peavey, founder and CEO of Peavey Electronics.

"We designed the Vypyr Series to offer the market something completely different, and our unique combination of patented analog and digital technologies gives guitar players an amazing range of tones and versatility, with highly accurate models of classic amps and effects. We're honored to once again earn our dealers' resounding approval for the Vypyr Series."

The Peavey Vypyr Series dramatically redefines the power and scope of modern guitar amplification. Vypyr amplifiers are based on powerful 32-bit, floating-point SHARC processors that enable highly detailed, accurate modeling as well as vastly enhanced flexibility and features than ever before available in guitar amplification.

Peavey Vypyr Series amplifiers feature up to 24 amp channel models—two channels of 12 popular amps for the first time anywhere—plus 11 editable preamp "stomp box" effects and 11 editable post-amp "rack" effects with dual-parameter control, global reverb and global delay. Players can add the optional Peavey Sanpera™ II foot controller to activate the on-board looper and expand the amp's 12 built-in presets to 400 programmable presets, with up to five simultaneous effects.

The Peavey Vypyr Series also includes the practice-size Vypyr 15 and Vypyr 30 combos; mid-size combos such as the Vypyr 75 and Vypyr 100; the Vypyr Tube 60 and Vypyr Tube 120 tube combos; and the Vypyr Tube 120H, a full-size guitar amp head.

At the 2010 Winter NAMM convention, held Jan. 14-17, in Anaheim, Calif., Peavey announced the new Vypyr 30 Head, Vypyr Mini Stack and Nano Vypyr. The Nano Vypyr combines 11 amp models and up to 32 effects combinations with AC or battery power to create the ultimate grab-and-go, portable modeling guitar amplifier.

The MMR Dealers' Choice award joins a collection of other prestigious awards, including Product of the Year and Instrument Amp of the Year from the Music & Sound Retailer, and the Gold Award for Overall Value from Guitar World.

Peavey Vypyr amps are endorsed by hard rock's top guitar players, including Corey Beaulieu of Trivium, Matt Tuck of Bullet For My Valentine and Phil Demmel of Machine Head.

Are You Ready For The One Song Challenge?

I was introduced via email to Brent who recently launched a unique online music contest called the One Song Challenge (www.OneSongChallenge.com)and here's the skinny on the competition.

The One Song Challenge is a unique online competition where contestants, who are musicians, are given one song to perform. Participants are free to interpret and perform the song any way they wish. They can choose any genre/instrument/tempo, transpose and make additions such as bridges and/or solos. All entries are posted on the site and the public chooses a winner.

I thought this was a pretty cool opportunity for musicians to get some extra exposure and being a....well...investigative kind of guy I called Brent to pick his brain a little bit about the contest. "I actually got the idea from watching Americas Got Talent" Brent said. "I was watching the show and I didn't think it was fair that someone would come out with a musical instrument and sing their heart out to end up getting out voted by someone that juggles or does a stand up routine. So I came up with the idea of just leveling the playing field for musicians." I think that Brent's idea has some good merit because everyone gets the same song and as a musician you can do whatever you want with it. You play it in your style with your voice."

Brent also added "there are no rules for the song its self, it just has to resemble the original song. But there are just a few rules for the contest."
  • Record your performance
  • Upload your video to YouTube with the title: "Together" - your band's name - One Song Challenge
  • Email us the following:  The link to your YouTube submission, your band's name and your town/city
  • Get it all done before the deadline of the contest.
A good example would be the winner of the last contest that just ended. Adrian Bilitch from Chino Hills, California did a great job. He played all of the instruments for the song, did the mixing and turned it into a real nice piece. You can check his performance out at this LINK

There is a new contest starting today. The song and details for the deadline will be posted on the site today so take a minute and check it out at www.OneSongChallenge.com. I'm looking forward to hearing some of the Rock House Members that can put something together  for the contest.

Rhythm Guitar Lesson with Backing Tracks

Intermediate players should be familiar with basic major and minor chords, as well as some typical chord extensions like sevenths and minor sevenths. In this intermediate lesson, we’ll explore many different techniques, styles and genres of music.

This lesson contains some standard rhythm progressions to get you started. Each rhythm includes an accompanying mp3 backing track that you can download, play along with or practice improvising solos over. If you aren’t familiar with reading rhythm slashes yet, listen to the backing tracks and follow along to hear how the rhythm should be played. Throughout many of my articles and lessons on Rock House, we’ll use similar rhythms to show you how to improvise, create your own solos, transpose and recognize standard chord progressions.

For our first rhythm, let’s take a normal I-IV-V chord change in the key of G major. By playing only on the upbeats using all upstrums, you can create a reggae feel. This demonstrates how the guitar can dictate the feel of a song by just using a different strumming pattern. The rhythm is shown here in rhythm slashes with chord names. You can play the chords using any voicing you want. Start out with simple open chords and once you’re comfortable with the rhythm, switch it up and try using barre chords or some different voicings.

Example 1

This next example is also a reggae rhythm, this time a very fast reggae in the key of Am. Use all upstrums like in the previous rhythm for the first three measures. Upstrummed reggae riffs sound great using smaller form chords played on the highest three or four strings. Try some different chord shapes and see which ones sound best for you.

Example 2

Now that we’ve had a few examples using a reggae feel, let’s try another simple I-IV-V progression in the key of C major using a country feel. The rhythm is shown in tablature and alternates between picking the bass notes and upstrumming the higher notes of the chords to create that country sound. This riff also incorporates single note melodic passing phrases to help move the rhythm from chord to chord. The actual chords that make up the progression are simple open position C, F and G chords. This example demonstrates how you can break up the strumming pattern of a simple chord change and add some melody in the bass notes to give it a country feel. Listen and play along with the backing track. Once you’ve got the country picking style down, try applying it to other chord progressions too.

Example 3

This next example is a moderate blues rhythm in B minor using minor seventh chords. This is a good progression to solo over using minor pentatonic or natural minor scales. Listen to the backing track and follow along with the rhythm slashes to get the syncopated feel in your head, then try to jam along.

Example 4

The last example in this section is a popular chord change in D minor. This progression is used in many classical style rock and metal songs. You can solo over this using either natural minor or harmonic minor scales; you’ll learn more about using these scales in other lessons at Rock House. The rhythm here is a 6/8 feel, which is usually counted in threes (One-two-three, one-two-three). The rhythm is written below, stripped down to its most basic form. You may hear slight variations in the strumming on the backing track and you can use those rhythmic variations as a guide to help you try some of your own rhythms. This progression is also a great one to play in 4/4 or other times signatures.

Example 5

Now that you’ve got a few rhythm progressions to get you started, get creative and come up with some new ideas. Try to play solos over the backing tracks, vary the strumming patterns or transpose the progressions to other keys.

The Weekend Read for January 22nd - Guitar Articles and More

The weekend read this week is hot! There were some great articles from our blogroll guitar lessons, gear reviews and there's a free pdf book in there somewhere if you look hard enough.

I did write and post the usual articles that go into The Rock House Blog every week. If you're looking for a good guitar lesson from us this week I posted one from John McCarthy titled "Sweep Picking Basics" and a player tip on "How Often Should You Change Your Guitar Strings?"

Now....on with the "Weekend Read"

Cameron Mizell - Guitarist - I’m not sure if it’s my distaste of digital multi-effects pedals or my lack of a gym membership, but I have come to terms with the fact that I will be dragging around a heavy pedalboard for the rest of my roadie-less career as an electric guitarist...Building My Pedalboard

Dolphinstreet Guitar Gear Blog - Sometimes I get asked about how to practice scales and exercises. In fact, one of my guitar students asked me yesterday about finger exercises and whether they are worth doing....Scale Practice Tip

Double Bass Blog - As a bassist, I have always taken advantage of all opportunities I find to play chamber music...Chamber Music and the Bassist, Part I: The Great Chamber Music Search

Guitar Noize - Great coverage from NAMM 2010 still going on here LINK

Guitarz -French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways...Zebra finches play electric guitar

I Heart Guitar - Nice personal conerage of NAMM 2010 still being posted LINK

Mark McGuigan Musicians Blog - Been a long time since MasterThatMelody has been updated but I shall endeavour to get some more added. Let’s kick things back into gear with the iconic instrumental piece ‘Always With Me, Always With You‘ by Mr Joe Satriani!...MasterThatMelody! 07 – Joe Satriani “Always With Me, Always With You”

Share My Guitar -Guitarists are often asked who their influences are. Depending on the style of music, they typically name a lot of the same people and bands, and for good reason. The more influential musicians are the ones who have made the most impact with their music and consequently have gotten the most recognition in the form of radio play, album sales, and touring. But what about the slew of unknowns?...My Influences Change on a Daily Basis!

Shred This Way - if you are an absolute beginner with the theory of modes, we would be covering a few detailed posts on the subject, but as for now I thought it would be a better to get you familiarised with the names of the 7 modes and ofcourse, like the title says, an easy and painless way to remember the names...Modes - Remember the names

The Classical Guitar Blog - Over the past week I made a short eBook about slurs. It comes with some practice suggestions and several groups of exercises...Free Stuff: Slur Exercises (PDF)

The Punch-in - Come on...Baby, Don't You Want to Know?...Blues Guitar Lesson: “Sweet Home Chicago” Genealogy

Rock House Method Donates to the Haitian Relief Fund - Urges Everyone to Help With Aid

On the Official Rock House Method web site today, Executive Director Joe Palombo wrote that Rock House is donating $100.00 to the American Red Cross. "We would like to reach out to all our friends in the Rock House community and ask that you dig deep to do what you can. I know our economy here has been put through the ringer and things might not be going to well in your world either, but I can't imagine that it can compare to what the people of Haiti are going through right now.  If you can, try to do the right thing and give what you can $2, $5, $10, $20, $ 50, every one has a few extra bucks... Hey have one less beer this month or make your lunch instead of buying it just one day.  Check out a list of reputable  organizations that will make sure your hard earned donation  money gets to place.

Thanks Joe P. for the great list links and helpful tips for donating safely.

Guitar Lesson - Sweep Picking Basics by John McCarthy

So you've learned a few arpeggios and it’s time to start slipping these awesome little attention getters into your leads. You can play them with standard alternate picking and they will sound great or you can kick it up a notch and throw in some jaw dropping SWEEP PICKING! In this lesson I’m going to get you started with this technique and give you some of my personal examples and exercises.

First of all let me clarify what sweep picking is by definition;

Sweep picking is a technique used on the guitar in which a 'sweeping' motion of the pick is combined with a matching fret hand technique in order to produce a specific series of notes which are fast and fluid in sound. Despite being commonly known as sweep picking, both hands essentially perform an integral motion in unison to achieve the desired effect.

Now I’m going to give you an arpeggio to use and I have a few tips that can really help you get this technique rocking. This is a basic “A” Major arpeggio. I played this arpeggio over and over so many times when I was first learning how to sweep I literally drove everyone in my house crazy, my sisters would whip shoes at me and scream STOP! And the reality of pissing them off I think gave me even more incentive to continue.

The Examples
Try example 1 below using these tips;Hold the pick very loosely, don’t tighten up your hand, wrist or arm.Don’t peck your pick at each note hold your hand in one position and drag it across the strings almost like you were brushing a finger across a metal rake.

Example #1 (Click on the images to make them larger)

Now I’m going to share with you an exercise that helped me out a lot when I was mastering this technique. Play the exercise in example 2 below moving it up the neck one fret at a time.

Example #2

Now you should be sweeping away I’m going to go one step further and give you some of my favorite sweep patterns. All these are movable and can be played in any key, the first note of each will be the root note or key.

Example 3 is an “A” minor arpeggio in the same position as the “A” Major arpeggio we first used and will have the same all down all up picking sequence.

Example #3

Example 4 is my favorite “A” minor arpeggio because it is full sounding and can be played quickly and easily. I sometimes add a right hand tap on the first string 17th fret (the “A” note) to embellish it. To get the consistent sweep picking motion you must start with an up pick, this is because there are two notes played on this string and by starting with an up stroke you can come down on the second note and continue the sweep across the rest of the strings.

Example #4

Example 5 is a sixth string root position “E” minor arpeggio that will also start with an up pick using the same picking variation as Example 4.

Example #5

Remember all these arpeggios are movable so try to play them in other spots around the neck in all keys. Now what are you waiting for…..get sweeping.

I’m sure you are signing autographs now and getting ready for your next performance, save me a seat at your next performance Rock Star!

Rob Balducci - Lick Of The Week Jamming on the Ibanez TSA 15H Tube Screammer Amp

While Rob Balducci was at NAMM 2010 he spent most of his time at the Ibanez booth shootin' the breeze with people and playing anything he could get his hands on. The Favored Nations artist and Rock House Instructor found a new toy he fell in love with. Rob plugged into the new Ibanez TSA 15H Tube Screamer amp and played Liquid Soul from his album Violet Horizon through it.

Rob Commented on his you tube site "Yes, it is a 15 watt amp that has a TS 808 built right into the head and it also has a 6 db boost. It comes with a foot switch. This is really cool and the price is so good you can get two."

"This just kicks....and I love the look of it as well".

Rock House Artists Lamb of God, Chimaira and Atreyu amoung 2010 Mayhem Bands

Rock House HQ always seems to pick the right artists to produce in their Instructional DVD's. This years Mayhem 2010 Tour is no exception to those artists. Rock House Instructors Rob Arnold of Chimaira, Will Adler of Lamb of God and Dan Jacobs from Atreyu will hit the road with their bands for Mayhem 2010.

A post at the Rockstar Mayhem 2010 site http://mayhemfest.com states:

"The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival featuring KORN and Rob Zombie kicks off July 10th in San Bernardino, CA and will roll through 24 cities in the U.S. and Canada between early July and late August.

This summer's lineup turns up the heat with a main stage lineup that sees KORN and Rob Zombie joined by Lamb Of God and Five Finger Death Punch. The Jagermeister stage will feature Hatebreed, Chimaira, Shawdows Fall, Winds Of Plague and the Jagermeister Battle of The Bands Winner. The Mayhem Festival stage will spotlight Atreyu, Norma Jean, In This Moment and 3 Inches Of Blood."

Should be one hell of concert series this summer.

Taylor Guitars Introduces the Baritone 8-String Guitar

Born from a love of tone and a passion for innovation, Taylor Guitars has expanded the possibilities of guitar voicing in its new model, the Baritone 8-String. With a bold, fresh sound, the Baritone 8-String broadens the tonal spectrum, giving players a rich musical palette that promises to uncork new inspiration of musical harmony.

Featuring a Grand Symphony body with a richly hued back and sides of Indian rosewood topped with Sitka spruce, the Baritone 8-String embodies the spirit of a traditional baritone guitar paired with Taylor’s quality craftsmanship and product innovation. The model features a longer-scaled 27-inch neck and Taylor designed baritone bracing. The guitar is tuned from B to B and features additional octave strings paired along with the third and fourth (D and A) strings. This feature gives players an extended range of sounds, without compromising tonal integrity or playability.

The Baritone 8-String came to be as Taylor’s product development team was deep in the throes of designing several series of 35th Anniversary guitars, including a 6-string baritone (XXXV-B) and a 9-string guitar (XXXV-9). The team decided to experiment by creating a hybrid of the two, as Bob Taylor explains: “We loved the traditional baritone, but missed having some of that upper register. We thought, what if we turned it into a 9-string baritone? So, we made one. But after deciding it was a little too jangly, we pulled off the [doubled second] string, leaving the third and fourth octave strings. It sounded awesome.”

Adding the two octave strings, Taylor says, transformed the baritone. “It’s a whole new ballgame. It’s really, really cool because you can either accentuate those octaves or stay away from them. The beauty of this guitar is that it goes low and those two strings brighten it up, but they don’t sound too ‘octave-y’. It doesn’t give you that 12-string effect as much as it really just extends the range because, as a baritone, the octaves aren’t really high. It fills the guitar out and gives it a nice (tonal) spread.”

The Baritone 8-String is tuned a fourth below standard guitar tuning, allowing the player to play songs in a lower register. In terms of the playing experience, Taylor’s David Hosler, a member of the product development team, compares the tonal properties of the 8-string baritone to a blend of three different instruments. “When I hear it, I feel like I’m hearing a 6-string, a bass, and a bit of 12-string all in one guitar,” he says. “In giving it a good listen, it sounds like standard and alternate tuning at the same time.”

The product development team at Taylor isn’t the only group excited about the new model. Taylor strumming dealers, from metal players to singer-songwriters, are lining up to play and share the experience with their customers. Matt Clancy, from Craig’s Music in Weatherford, Texas sampled the 8-string during a fall Taylor Road Show event. As a heavy metal musician, he was blown away with the “bigness of the tone.” In fact, he says his favorite thing about the guitar is the tonal fullness he gets from a single strum. “When you’re playing regular chords on the 8-string, there’s so much more body, especially with octave strings,” he elaborates. “It opens up the way minor chords sound, and they sound huge on it. It’s a great guitar for guys who do metal and some acoustic rock, as it’s perfect for power chords, and for some jazz too, especially if they like playing in low B. It’s a guitar that’s filled with big, tonal goodness. It adds a depth that you can’t get from any other guitar on the market right now.”

Evan Carmen, a Taylor dealer from Morgan Music in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, had the chance to play an 8-string prototype during a recent visit to the Taylor factory. As an acoustic singer-songwriter, Carmen is sure this guitar will be an addition to his collection. “There is practical application in nearly every style and genre I can think of,” he says. “It’s only a matter of time before it starts changing music forever. I can’t wait to see how people react to it right out of the gate. No doubt, we’ll be hearing it used frequently after people catch wind of what it’s capable of. I can’t wait to have one of my own.”

As enchanting as the guitar is to play and listen to, it’s equally attractive visually. The model’s appointments include a mother-of-pearl peghead inlay and delicate diamond-shaped fretboard inlays, a three-ring abalone rosette, and abalone-dotted bridge pins. Premium features include Indian rosewood binding, a bone nut and saddle, and an all-gloss finish. Amplified with the Taylor Expression System® pickup and strung with ELIXIR® Baritone strings, the model is also offered in a standard 6-string version. Available at authorized domestic and international Taylor dealers in mid-winter, the Baritone 8-String will be offered at a suggested retail price of $3,998 and the Baritone 6-String at $3,798.

How Often Should You Change Your Guitar Strings?

When to change the strings on your guitar, whether it’s electric, acoustic or bass guitar, is a question or a thought that gets tosses around quite a bit. When it comes to changing strings there are a lot of opinions and all kinds of formulas for why and when to change them. Some Musicians on the road with a heavy tour schedule will have them changed before every show, some people subscribe to the once a month or even the once a year theory and I even heard one “old timer” say he has never changed them.

The main reason for changing your strings is that they are usually made of steel. The dirt and oil from your fingers get built up on them and that causes corrosion. It also causes them to sound dull. Humidity also plays a factor with string corrosion, even if you don’t play much at all humidity can cause them to deteriorate over time.

Whatever your choice is there are a few things you should think about when deciding to change strings.

  1. Do you care how bright or how dull the strings sound? It’s kind of a strange thing to consider. I always feel like my guitar should have a bright sound to it so when things are sounding dull, that’s an indication it’s time for a change. Then, there are those who are found of the dull “thud” sound from older strings. They don’t change them as often as some people do.
  2. How do you take care of your strings? Do you wipe them down after every time you play or do you just put the instrument away or back on the stand when you get done. Wiping your stings off with a soft cloth will help them last longer.
  3. How often do you play the guitar? It makes a difference how often you are going to change the strings if you play for several hours a day compared to several hour a week of a month.
  4. How much money do you have? If your budget is tight it may not be economical for you  to change them as often as you would like. Bass guitar strings start at about 10 bucks and I have seen them as much as $99 for a set of 6 strings. Strings for acoustic or electric guitar start at about 2 or 3 bucks and top out at about $30 for a set.
A while back I remember John McCarthy of Rock House came up with a simple guideline on how often you should change strings.

If you play the guitar                                             Change your strings every
2 hours every day.............................................................2 to 3 weeks

30 minutes to 1 hour a day..........................................1 month to 6 weeks

30 minutes to 1 hour...................................................6 weeks to 2 months
3 to 5 times a week

Almost never or rarely......................................................2 to 3 months

Whatever you decide is best for your situation, consider the above thoughts the next time you are wondering if it’s time for a string change.

The Weekend Read for January 16th - Guitar Articles and More

With all the news from NAMM 2010 this should be a good "Weekend Read". Although I didn't personally make out to Anaheim this year there are a number of good bloggers that did. There are many articles about what is going on out there and some good stories too.
