It is a good idea for guitar and bass guitar players to keep their fretting hand finger nails trimmed and smooth. You really don't want them getting in the way of your playing. You want your calluses to touch the strings. If you get lazy and don't trim them, you may notice that they start getting in the way and playing becomes more difficult.
