ESP and Spinefarm Present: Children of Bodom Bloodrunk Tour Presale

News from Rock House Instructor Alexi Laiho and the COB'sMy Space @ http://www.myspace.com/childrenofbodom

Finland’s heavy metal superstars CHILDREN OF BODOM will return to North America this fall to headline a massive, month-long tour. The award-winning band, which features front man and world-renowned guitar hero Alexi Laiho, will launch the tour on Friday, September 18 at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI.

Presented by ESP Guitars and Spinefarm Records in association with EMG, Exclaim! and Guitar World, the 20-city CHILDREN OF BODOM headlining trek is scheduled to run through October 14 in Honolulu, HI and will hit major markets in both the U.S. and Canada along the way. Support on the COB tour will be provided by The Black Dahlia Murder and Skeletonwitch. Additional media partners include KillerTours.com, and Hollywood Music TV.

CHILDREN OF BODOM made headlines this past May when the band was forced to cancel the tail end of its spring North American tour with Lamb of God after Laiho broke his shoulder and suffered internal bleeding as a result of a tour bus mishap. After bravely performing ten live dates with the serious injuries, the toll became too much for the guitarist to endure and CHILDREN OF BODOM made the decision to cut the tour short, placing Laiho’s long-term health as its first priority. Now, after rest and a successful recovery, Laiho and COB are back with a renewed vigor and ready to return stronger than ever before.

Ticket pre-sales for the CHILDREN OF BODOM tour officially begin on Wednesday, June 24 at 3:00 PM local time. The pre-sale landing page provides fans with the option to pre-order the upcoming new COB album, as well as to purchase a special VIP package with a concert ticket, meet ‘n greet pass, autographed poster and the new record. To do so, visit this location. https://tixx1.artistarena.com/childrenofbodom/

Alexi Laiho was named "Best Metal Guitarist" in the 15th annual Guitar World Reader's Poll. Laiho, called “a guitar hero for the new millennium” by the magazine, bested well known players such as Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Ihsahn of Emperor and more to win the coveted award. Alexi is currently featured alongside fellow guitar hero George Lynch on the cover of Guitar Center’s “June Guitar Buyers Guide”. Video of Laiho and Lynch “discussing music, tone and ESP” can be seen now on Guitar Center’s website: GuitarCenter.com.

In addition to Laiho, CHILDREN OF BODOM features Janne Warman (keyboard), Roope Latvala (guitar), Henkka Seppälä (bass) and drummer Jaska Raatikainen.

Video Guitar Lesson - Alexi Laiho: Complete lead – “Next In Line” With Tab

Alexi Laiho is the lead guitarist, vocalist and song writer for the melodic death metal band from Espoo, Finland “Children of Bodom”.  Alexi has a great talent for creating technical yet interesting leads; most are like mini compositions that have several sections each with their own personality. His wide variety of skills gives him a seamlessly endless “bag of tricks” that he draws from frequently. Alexi has been rising as one of the most talented shredders of todays metal music, I had a chance to work with him on a few instructional programs and see his talents first hand and I can tell you that it is not just hype he is an amazing player. Let’s take a look and see what one of his lead compositions contains.

“Next In Line” is a signature Alexi Lead from the CD “Are You Dead Yet”. In this lead he has a perfect blend of Melodic riffs, masterful techniques and ripping speed runs. Take a look at the complete lead in EX.1 and then I’ll break it down and analyze each section.

In the first section Alexi uses the whammy bar a rhythm instrument by picking a note and hitting his palm against the whammy bar to make the note sound in a melodic manor, the next three notes aren’t pick either he just hammers his finger down and hits the bar to sound these notes.

The second section is a string skipping scale run. Make sure to watch Alexi’s alternate picking on this riff that helps make this a silky smooth riff.

In the third section you’ll find double stops from the key of “E” Minor Pentatonic scale followed by double pump bends. These bends really give a bit of feel to the lead that you wouldn’t get by just ripping speed runs at 100 mph from beginning to end.

The fourth section starts with an ascending scale run then a bend into right hand tap technique.

The fifth section is simply a repetitive “E” octave slide starting at the 24th fret of the 1st string.

The sixth section is a right hand tapping pivot riff where the highest note is the tapped pivot note and your fingers fret a sequence of notes that are pulled off to below. He starts with a 22nd fret 1st string tap/pivot then moves it down to the 20th fret. Play this slowly at first it’s tricky.

The seventh section incorporates an open string whammy dive followed by a pentatonic run.

The eighth section is a ripping descending natural minor scale run that is characteristic of many of Alexi’s leads. Again pay attention to the alternate picking this is the key to getting it to sound so smooth.

This lesson comes from Alexi’s Rock House Method Metal Guitar program. You can download the complete video lesson and backing track to play with this lead for free at http://www.rockhousemethod.com/gpultimatemetal/gpulitmatemetal2. Check out all Alexi Laiho’s complete Rock House programs at www.rockhousemethod.com.

DiMarzio® releases new John Petrucci Signature Pickups

One thing has stayed consistent throughout John Petrucci’s long and successful career: the DiMarzio® pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive metal since the late eighties, and the DiMarzio® LiquiFire™ Neck Model, DiMarzio® Crunch Lab™ Bridge Model, DiMarzio® LiquiFire 7™ Neck Model and the Crunch Lab 7™ Bridge Model resulted from our most recent collaboration with John. He used them throughout Dream Theater’s tenth studio album, “Black Clouds and Silver Linings” released June 23.

Since the mid 1990s, John’s neck pickup sound has been based on either the standard Air Norton™ or the custom version in his Ernie Ball® guitars. The LiquiFire™ hasseveral significant differences. Its treble response is warmer and smoother while bass response is tighter and brighter. The total sound has a more focused voice, which works equally well for highly overdriven solos and complex, clean chords. The sound John likes in the neck position of his 6-string translates very well to the 7- string, with fat highs and clean lows for smooth solos and tight bass lines. The LiquiFire 7™ isn’t an exact duplicate of the 6-string version. The attack is a little more focused and the voicing is shifted down about 500Hz to bring out the sound of the
seventh string.

The Crunch Lab™ is noteworthy for what it doesn’t do – it’s not a screamer, and it’s not about thundering lows. Its physical appearance is identical to the D Sonic™, but the internal design is a lot different. It’s louder, and the highs have more depth. The lows and mids are more open, and this is crucial for playing chords with body and presence through a gained–out amp. The voicing of the pickup is also different enough to the point that John prefers the Crunch Lab™ to be installed in almost all of his guitars (including the JP Bari) with the solid bar toward the neck, regardless of the guitar’s tuning. Also available in a 7-string version, The Crunch Lab 7™. DiMarzio continues to produce innovative designs for demanding players. For complete product descriptions, videos and technical information visit our website at www.dimarzio.com.

Review – Rob Balducci’s Violet Horizon

“Our past is simultaneeus with the present
as the future has entirely surpassed,
dimension symmetry are as one…
can it be between our exisitance, the violet horizon…”

-    Rob Balducci

And so starts the journey into the Rob Balducci’s newest CD Violet Horizon. Words worth pondering from a bold Musician, Artist and Guitarist. The words come from the inside cover of the CD. The 4th CD from The Favored Nations Artist is an instrumental journey one will play again and again.Balducci takes his listeners through a musical journey of ups and downs.

Beginning with the title track “Violet Horizon” it has some smooth cool tones, then moves into “Friction”. “Friction” will smack you in the mouth with it's wild leads and tones. The song gives the feeling of driving a race car with the gas pedal pushed to the floor and hitting the breaks at the same time, it’s a wild ride through some good musical effects.

The songs all have that Rob Balducci’s sigature on them, you will make no mistake when listening to the CD that this is Rob Balducci…at his best. In the song  “The Essence”, Balducci uses his signature vibrato work that he is known for along with some old and new school soloing.

“Liquid Soul” does just that. It turns your soul to liquid. Balducci uses his guitar techniques to drive some hard edge licks and then makes you feel like the music world has turned to liquid. The phrasing, licks and chops are simply amazing to listen to.

Balducci slows it all back down again with some old school blues in the song “Trinity” adding of course some slick vibrato and switching between clean tones and effects. I felt the phrasing in this song was some of the best on the CD. Literally one that I could listen to over and over.

The Song “Float” takes you through some well done chorus effects that actually gives the feeling of floating. Slow and easy it’s a good song that will have a calming effect on you.

“My Desire”, another favorite of mine. It just has some nice grooves and the phrasing again it is spectacular.

Two thumbs up on “Bal’s Grove Thing”, I just loved hearing the old school blues with Rob’s signature tone on them. I feel like he really captured the essence of the blues grooves on this one. Nice clean tones with the flavor of Balducci written all over it.

“Shine” has a most origional groove to it. The rhythm had my head bobbing up and down, the leads had it moving back and forth. A very soulful, bright sounding song.

“Sleekstack” could easily be the star of the CD. With a guest solo from Guthrie Govan. Rob Balducci fuses a dark metal beat with his leads. It works and it works well. The song again has the signature of Balducci. The tones, effects, groove and vibrato make it an accomplished piece of work.

Another guest soloist Dave Weiner adds some cool flavor to “Devil’s Juice”. Weiner Gives the song a fantastic rhythm, Balducci again adds his signature to the song.

I think that the new CD from Rob Balducci is easily his best work to date. Keeping pace with what his fans expect from his work yet putting a touch to it that should attract loads of new listeners. Violet Horizon will be in my collection for many years to come.

LIVING COLOUR To Release New Album ‘THE CHAIR IN THE DOORWAY’

Living Colour will release their first new studio album in five years entitled The Chair In The Doorway on September 15 via Megaforce Records. The legendary downtown NYC rock band, who exploded out of CBGB’s in the late ’80s, landing all over MTV, the cover of Rolling Stone and stadium stages around the world with their Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum debut album Vivid, are back and “fierce” as ever.

Original members Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Will Calhoun and (since 1993) Doug Wimbish gathered at Sono Studios outside of Prague in The Czech Republic during the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009 to write and record what would become The Chair In The Doorway. The results stretch from the modern soul anthem “Behind The Sun” to the politically-charged, heavy rock of “DecaDance” to the sacred steel blues of “Bless Those.” The artwork for The Chair In The Doorway was compiled from thousands of contest entries by fans from around the world.

“We feel like this is the best record we’ve made yet and we couldn’t be more excited to be releasing it with the legendary Megaforce Records,” says guitarist Vernon Reid. “Some of our favorite bands were or are Megaforce artists, Metallica, Bad Brains, Anthrax, Black Crowes, so it’s an honor to be part of a label with a great legacy.”

Living Colour will announce plans for a world tour shortly. With dates set to begin in September, it will include their first North American tour in four years along with performances in South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Having helped to pave the way for a number of contemporary African-American artists to follow in their wake, ranging from Rage Against The Machine to Lenny Kravitz to Ben Harper, with a multi-dimensional sound that drew equally from Jimi Hendrix, Bad Brains, Talking Heads and Ornette Coleman, the success of Living Colour broke down the color barriers in rock music. Guitarist and founding member Vernon Reid also founded the Black Rock Coalition to use his influence to further this cause.

Discovered by Mick Jagger who produced their first demo and later offered them an opening slot with The Rolling Stones, Living Colour would go on to create a repertoire that includes a multitude of classic songs, including “Cult Of Personality,” “Elvis Is Dead,” “Open Letter To A Landlord,” “Glamour Boys” and “Love Rears Its Ugly Head.” With The Chair In The Doorway, the fifth album of their storied career, Living Colour expands the scope of their timeless body of work and, in the process, proves vital as ever.

Track listing:

1. Burned Bridges
2. The Chair
3. DecaDance
4. Young Man
5. Method
6. Behind The Sun
7. Bless Those
8. Hard Times
9. Taught Me
10. Out Of Mind
11. Not Tomorrow
