My good friend Tom Wurth has been breaking into the country charts for about 15 years now. His latest CD release "If The Road Runs Out" was recently reviewed in Country Weekly Magazine and received 3 1/2 stars.
I met Tom about 5 years ago when he came to The Gathering Place where I spend my down time jamming with my buddies. I didn't know him from a hill of beans but he was in town for his first CD release party tour.
I helped set up the show with him and got to know Tom pretty well. He's a what you see is what you get kind of guy, meaning honest as the day is long. He was very personable and loved talking to anyone and everyone. We had a few shots, talked about the Nashville scene and I played his Larravee guitar for a bit. The show started and I was just blown away at his musical abilities and his voice. I wish I would have videoed the performance. The show was titled "One Man, One Guitar" and it highlighted his guitar performing abilities as well as his knock out vocals.
I maybe shouldn't have said breaking into the business earlier but it didn't come easy. Catching breaks in Nashville and being in the right place at the time are what is needed to get started.
Tom Wurth officially entered the work force in the music industry as a mail clerk at Aaron Brown Publishing and being at the right place, at the right time, led him to chance of a lifetime. Tom was tapped to perform the lead vocals on Aaron Brown’s childrens project entitled LOVE SONGS AND LULLABYES FOR DADDY’S LITTLE DREAMER (Aaron Brown Publishing) after Brown caught a glimpse of Wurth’s set at a songwriter’s showcase downtown.
Wurth and his collaborators earned a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Album for Children in 1996. Tom said “It was the first time the Grammy Awards show was held in Madison Square Garden. I remember sitting in the audience with the other nominees in the category; Alison Krauss was sitting right behind me; I was thinking ‘I’m the only guy here nominated making $6.00 an hour in a mail room."
Wurth returned from the ceremonies in the Big Apple and has since spent his time in Nashville recording and writing as a ASCAP affiliate songwriter and member of BMG Music Publishing. Over his more than ten years on Music Row, Tom has written with a long list of accomplished songwriters including Bart Butler, John Ford Coley, Ken Mellons and John Jarrard. He’s taken his live show on the road to perform alongside mentor John Ford Coley, Ronnie Milsap, friends Ken Mellons and Vince Gill, and he’s opened for Jimmy Wayne. Working from behind the board, he just completed producing special projects for Eddie Money and John Ford Coley.
Here's video with a compilation of a few songs that Tom performed live.
