It's great to be able to play along with your favorite recordings note for note, but you can get even more out of practicing by analyzing and experimenting with them.

• Isolate your favorite riffs and sections and transpose to other keys
• Try playing them at different speeds using different techniques.
• hear how the notes interact with the chord progressions and apply these ideas to different situations.

By doing all of this it will help you to build a well rounded improvisational vocabulary.
