Thoughts on Practice

Ever thought about practice? Of course you do, you think about it everyday. Every time you look at your gear and instruments you think about practice. You think “I should pick that bad boy up and practice or play something.” Then you turn on the TV or stick a video game in your game system and soon the thoughts of practice gone.

Think about this. A music teacher will tell a student to practice 3 – 5 times a week for a half hour. Mostly, to give the student a goal. Secondly, in hopes that a small fire will build and light the student on fire, to yearn for more.

Here’s the thought. The instrument gives back to you what you put into it. If you put 30 minutes 2 or 3 times a week into your instrument that’s exactly what you’re going to get from it, not much. What happens next is that you begin to get frustrated and interest drops. But if you put 30 minutes a day 7 days a week into it, then in a short time it starts to give back to you what you are wanting. Improvement! When you see improvement you start to get excited about what you are doing. So, soon 30 minutes a day turns into an hour a day and eventually an hour will literally turn into hours. If you play/practice everyday pretty soon it goes from scheduling a time in the day to play to becoming part of your day without thought.

Nice post - some good thoughts on the cumulative power of practice. It even goes a step further - if you can plan and use your time effectively you'll get better even quicker - resulting in a greater desire to more etc.

Hi,

Nicely put. It seems obvious but it's too easy to forget so thanks for the nice reminder.
