Link of The Day - Bernie Worrell - Living Legend

There is so much history to Bernie Worrell one wonders where to begin. Bernie has been involved with so many artists and groups it would blow your mind. His influence in music has shaped funk and rock music into what it is today. Something that only a true living legend could do.

A child prodigy he began studying and playing piano at the age of 3. His classical studies would continue throughout his adolescence, including private lessons at the Julliard School of Music, before he entered the New England Conservatory of Music.

Worrell served for several years as Musical Director for Maxine Brown before joining George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic crew.

The hits were many: "Flashlight," "Atomic Dog," "Aqua Boogie," "Cosmic Slop" and "Red Hot Mama" are only a few of the Parliament/Funkadelic classics which Worrell co-wrote, played and co-produced on literally dozens of albums -- not to mention his years of wild P-Funk performances, which quickly became the stuff of lore.

In 1997, Worrell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Parliament/Funkadelic (Talking Heads would follow five years later). That same year, he launched his own group, Bernie Worrell and the WOO Warriors, which has performed all over the US and abroad to rave reviews. The in-concert energy of this ensemble has twice been captured on live albums: Bernie Worrell and the WOO Warriors Live (1998) and True DAT (2002).

The "Wizard of WOO" continues to wear many hats as effortlessly as he mixes musical forms, performing with both Mos Def's Black Jack Johnson band and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains -- while at the same time, continuing to perform from time-to-time as "Special Guest" with Clinton's P-Funk All-Stars.

Bernie is currently on tour. His concert dates are posted at The Rock House Method under The Tour/Clinic Dates. His discography is incredible, crediting him to over 150 appearances and albums.

It would take us days to write only a portion of the history about Bernie Worrell, so here's the links. You can spend the better part of a day or 2 reading about The "Wizard of WOO", "The Lining Legend", Mr. Bernie Worrell.

Unlocking Autism

Looking through the links that hagarfreak33 sent me I thought I would pay a little more attention to this site. I don't know of many people that could say they have not seen or know of someone affected with Autism. But do you really know what it is?

Unlocking Autism is an organization that was founded primarily for the purpose of increasing awareness about the disorder.

So what is Autism?

Autism is a developmental disability that generally appears between 15 and 20 months of age. In most cases, the child is progressing normally, and then begins to regress losing speech, social skills and physical abilities. While there are varying degrees of severity, most children completely withdraw into a world of their own.

A frightening aspect of the disorder is that children cannot assess sensory input properly. Autistic children cannot perceive fear or dangerous situations, nor can they filter and ignore stimulus. This sensory overload would be equivalent to your being intensely aware of the feel and color of this paper, the sensation of each article of clothing you are wearing, every single sound coming from the street and inside the building around you, and the fluorescent lights and every object that reflects the light near you. If a child with autism could read this letter, they would have to endure all of this and more while trying to concentrate and comprehend this material. Normal functioning under this kind of sensory bombardment is nearly impossible.

Autistic children typically have a host of biomedical and neurological problems as well. Many suffer from chronic diarrhea because their intestines are so damaged that they cannot absorb vital nutrients, minerals and vitamins essential for optimal brain function. Liver and kidney functions are impaired causing their bodies to store up high levels of toxins found in the environment such as lead, mercury, arsenic and other heavy metals. Their immune systems are compromised to the extent that they cannot fight off even the simplest of fungal, parasitic and bacterial infections.

Children do not outgrow autism. There is no cure. It is a lifelong disability with a normal life expectancy. It affects boys five times more than it affects girls, although girls are generally more severely affected. In the United States over one half million individuals live with autism, making it more prevalent than Down Syndrome, childhood diabetes, and childhood cancer combined.

For information please visit Unlocking Autism and raise your own awareness about this disorder.

Link of The Day - hagarfreak33

Hagarfreak33.....no wait it's the artist formally known as hagarfreak33 Ken Sacco....ummm no hold on he's hagarfreak33 again. At any rate whatever name you know Ken by one thing is for certain, he has fun doing what ever it is that he is doing. Ken is the jokester of the Rock House Forums.

Fun at Rock House is not what Ken is all about. Making life fun for his family is one of Ken's main priorities. Music is a family past time for the Sacco's. Ken, his wife and their kids spend family time making music. All of them play instruments and all of them sing. They have recorded over a dozen songs together, there are links at the bottom of this post that will take you to their sound click pages.

Ken is co-owner of Band Essentials. Band Essentials is a graphic design company that can make custom graphics for your strat, give you a better myspace.com page or a complete CD album package.

Another subject that Ken holds dear to his heart is Autism. Ken's wife is the Connecticut rep. for the organization, Unlocking Autism. They have first hand experience with Autism and do everything they can to help promote and raise funds for biomedical research, behavioral research, and projects.

Orange launches Tiny Terror Combo

The Orange Tiny Terror was only launched eighteen months ago and after selling over ten thousand units, has proven to be one of the most in-demand amps in the world. During this time period Orange has been under sustained pressure from guitarists, studios and journalist to launch a Tiny Terror combo and now Orange can announce they will debut the new Tiny Terror combo at the forthcoming Messe show.

Part of the appeal of the Tiny Terror was that its clever design which packed everything into something not much more than the size of a lunch box and weighing in at only a few pounds. Orange have kept to the same concept in designing the combo version by keeping it extremely compact, with a look very reminiscent of classic 70’s Orange OTR combo’s. As with the head it is competitively priced and most importantly the unique signature tone is every bit as good as the original.

The amp section of the new combo is identical to the Tiny Terror and in designing the speaker section, they used a Celestion 30 watt G12H anniversary speaker.

Built to Orange quality standards, the new combo uses top quality components and it’s roadworthy rugged construction is what you’d expect from an Orange amp.

Third annual VH1 Rock Honors to pay tribute to The Who; surviving members to perform together

Mar 25, 08 1:15 PM CDT AP Worldstream

The VH1 music network holds The Who in such high regard that the rock group is the only act being honored at its upcoming Rock Honors.

Now in its third year, the Rock Honors typically celebrate a handful of momentous rock groups and artists: previous honorees have included ZZ Top, Genesis, Kiss and Queen.

But this year, only the Who will be celebrated during the two-hour broadcast, to be taped July 12 in Los Angeles and aired on the network July 17. The group, which now consists of surviving members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, is due to perform along with other acts who will pay tribute to the legendary band.

"The Who defined the rock era. Their music truly pushed boundaries, connected with millions of rock fans and inspired countless bands to fulfill their own musical destinies," said Tom Calderone, VH1's executive vice president and general manager.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers came to prominence in the 1960s with hits like "The Kids Are Alright," "My Generation," and created the groundbreaking rock opera "Tommy."

Drummer Keith Moon died of an overdose of prescription drugs in 1978, and bass guitarist John Entwistle was found dead of a heart attack in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2002.

Music fans picking Wikipedia

From NME.com

New data collected by internet search engine Yahoo has revealed that music fans searching for information about bands choose to go a band's Wikipedia page rather than their MySpace page or official band website, despite MySpace offering streaming music from bands.

According to the data, after searching for a band name music fans head to a band’s Wikipedia page, searching there twice as often as they go to the band’s MySpace page. The data results come despite the fact that MySpace claims to feature over three million band profiles with music, compared to Wikipedia’s “tens of thousands”.

Jay Walsh, communications manager for Wikipedia, said that website bosses were not considering adding music to artists’ pages on the site. "That's not what we're about," he said. "We're about knowledge. We're about bringing the reader to other free content – content they can use and enjoy without worrying about violating any copyrights."

Rock House Link of The Day - Steve Belong

Rock House Member Steve Belong is The Rock House Link of The Day. Steve was one of the first 2 first musicians featured as member of the month on Rock Houses newest project Jam Pages.

Steves says "I started playing at the age of 15 and am for the most part self taught. Some of my early influences included: Malmsteen, Batio, Becker, Friedman Bach & Paganini; but also influenced by many styles including: neoclassical, metal, classical, blues & classic rock. Started playing in a band at the age of 16 and by 17 was gigging local establishments and events in Liverpool and the surrounding areas, as both lead guitarist and lead vocalist. In recent years I’ve been focusing more on songwriting, recording and trying to find a label. However, I enjoy giving guitar lessons and assisting new guitarists on instructional sites such as "RockHouseMethod.com" whenever time allows. I’ve been gaining some fans as of late, by being played on internet radio stations & podcasts and even winning a top 20 prize in an online song competition for "SoundClick.com.". I’m currently looking for a label and in the process of writing new material for a debut album.

You can listen to Steves music and read more about him at the links below.

Rock House Link of The Day - Alex Bach

Alex Bach is one muti-talented artist. Whether playing in an amphitheatre or in a coffeshop, Alex Bach keeps her principles of entertainment constant: establish an emotional connection with the audience, deliver what the audience expects, and then win them over by giving them more than they expected. Originally heading for law school so she could fight for justice and defend the underdog, Alex soon realized that songwriting was a more universal way to stand up for her beliefs. A tireless social worker, Alex uses music as a platform to comfort & inspire others. She is always honoured to do benefit concerts and volunteer work. Alex also loves motivating future generations of musicians to reach for their personal best by giving private guitar lessons, in person and on DVD. Alex has a Rock House Method DVD called Guitar for Girls.

Doug Wimbish on Playing Well With Others

From the Blog Of Doug Wimbish at his MySpace web site.
The floor on Doug Wimbish’s side of the stage is carpeted with pedals of every shape, size, color, and sound, flanked by an Apple iBook full of effects and two Alesis Air Fx boxes. In this interview, Doug explains how he chooses what to play and how he integrates it all into the hard-rocking musical art that is Living Colour.

"It’s mostly about chemistry - and about enhancing and supporting the others on stage," says Doug Wimbish, while chilling on the well-worn sofa after an afternoon recording session at Island Recorders studio in Chicago.

"If the template is there, and you are working within the role that is designated, you can use your talents to create a sense of enhancement without overstating the point."

Doug tours a lot, with Living Colour and various other projects, such as Tackhead and Head>>Fake. Playing the same material show after show, how does he keep it so fresh?

"Some songs have room for continuous growth," said Wimbish. "It depends on the original components. Also, some projects take a complete turn, doors open, creating new opportunities."
As for drummers, Wimbish has played with the best of the best including; Will Calhoun in Living Colour, Keith LeBlanc, Dennis Chambers and Terry Bozzio. When asked his opinion about the relationship between the bassist and the drummer, he likened it to the relationship between the center and quarterback in football.

"The center has to get the ball to the quarterback so the play can happen. It’s that combination that creates the play."

Wimbish explains. "The drums create the rhythm, but it’s the bass that governs that rhythm by presenting sonic ideas and tying in time between rhythms and notes. The bass and drums create one vehicle. Each must find the median - based on the space in the song. Bass and drums should help enhance each other. It’s natural. It depends on the space that’s created by the mindset of the individual musician.

The success of the relationship is defined by how you think and how generous you are - how willing you are to put the music first. It’s best if the two people are not selfish and have respect for the music. If you can park the personality and come to the stage or session with respect for the music and each other, you’re automatically a 50% better player."

Rock House Link of The Day - Mike Carr

The Rock House Link of The Day is our very own Mike Carr. Mike is like the Shell answer man of The Rock House Forums. If you want to know about it, or how to play it, or why it's the way that it is, he knows and he's more than willing to explain it to you.

Mike is the king of the CAGED system, equipment and helpful links. Mike was one of the first member of Rock House, JP co-owner of The Rock House Method often jokes that Mike was like member number 50. There are currently more than 115,000 registered members at Rock House. He has made over 8,000 helpful posts to members in need of advice.

Mike other interests other than music and guitars are his family, cage fighting and simply helping others. He has even given away some of his older gear, books and videos to new members needing at hand at getting started on their music venture.

Mike doesn't have any personal web sites. Well he has a MySpace site, but doesn't have time to keep up with it. So, he sent me a list of the 5 web sites he thinks a person learning to play music would benefit the most from.

Songkick makes going to shows as easy as going to the movies.

British Internet startup Songkick launched Wednesday with a vow to inspire digital-age music lovers to reclaim the joy of hearing bands play live in real-world venues.

The London-based website debuts with a free online service that matches people's tastes in music with the schedules of bands performing in the US or UK.

"It's all about changing the way people think about Friday night," Songkick cofounder Ian Hogarth told AFP during an interview in San Francisco.

"The music industry isn't dying; it is just moving to live. People really value that real-world experience. We are focused on using the web to make people get off the web and in front of a band."

Songkick's goal is to make it as simple to find live music as it is to find out which movies are playing at local theaters.

FAQ,s from their web site state.

It was too much work to find out when our favorite bands come to town. We subscribed to mailing lists, used tour tracking websites, and read music blogs/Pitchfork religiously for tour news. It was really time-consuming. So we're building the live music listings and recommendations website we want. Finding concert tickets is easy on Songkick. Never pay more than you have to!

Googling for concert tickets is a pain. Our concert ticket search engine makes it easy. We aggregate listings from 16 different ticket vendors in the US and UK. We put all the concert listings and links to ticket sellers in one place so you can compare prices. We never charge you anything! It costs the same as if you'd found the tickets yourself in the first place.

When you sign up for an account, you can track tours for all your favorite bands. Your profile page on Songkick is like your personalized dashboard for fun. It presents you a schedule of when your tracked artists are coming to town, the shows you've saved, and the concerts we think you'll like based on your taste.

Any engine can make recorded music recommendations, but live music recommendations are trickier. That's because the set of artists playing live (your brother's garage band at your local bar's open mic night) is quite different from the set of artists with albums out.

Our technology considers any mention of music on the web as a data point for our recommendations. By casting our data net wide (including anything about music on the internet) and deep (aggregating expert critical opinion from blogs and music publications), we can infer similarities between artists, compare this to your personal music taste, and recommend concerts we think you'll actually go to.

Check it out today.

Rock House Link of The Day - Chris McCarvill

The Rock House Method Link of The Day is Chris McCarvill.

I see a pattern with The Rock House Instructor/Artists. They are all busy and have a hand in so many projects and bands. Chris McCarvill is no exception. Chris has been performing since the early age of 5 and has never stopped. He plays bass guitar, drums and sings too.

A blurb from McCarvills MySpace site ........ "As an Artist and Songwriter using Bass as the forefront instrument, Chris has established himself as an innovator and explorer of many musical genres. Chris’ presence and the mastery of his instrument are felt on every recording. As easy as breathing, Chris’s moment-to-moment conversational bass lines are an innate emotional response to his creative process. The freedom in his playing is his trademark and creates an undeniable signature to his music."
And from the XFactorX web site ....... "Also the bassist for Eddie Ojeda of Twisted Sister on his solo project and Obsession with Mike Vescera. Chris recently toured the world with the bands House of Lords and Jeff Scott Soto. Chris recently played the Winter NAMM show in California along side George Lynch and Alexi Laiho. You can catch Chris playing localy with his cover band Liplok ."

Hearing Loss and MP3 Players

A CAMPAIGN warning young people about the damage that can be done by listening to too-loud music visits Edinburgh today.

The Royal National Institute for the Deaf is due to bring its Don't Lose the Music Squad to The Mound, in Princes Street.

The move follows research which revealed that 90 per cent of young people experience the signs of hearing damage after a night out yet do nothing to prevent it.

The charity's Don't Lose the Music campaign is now investigating the levels at which people listen to their MP3 players to see if they are listening too loudly and causing hearing damage.

RNID's Scotland director, Delia Henry, said: "There were 8.5 million MP3 players sold last year in the UK alone and many of them can reach sound levels above 100 decibels – far louder than the 85 decibels which the World Health Organisation says can damage hearing over time.

"RNID's Don't Lose the Music Squad has come to Edinburgh to see how loudly shoppers are listening and to offer them advice on how to protect their hearing."

RIAA - In New Law Suit

A woman who claims the recording industry's anti-music piracy campaign threatens and intimidates innocent people has filed a new complaint accusing record companies of racketeering, fraud and illegal spying.

Tanya Andersen originally sued the Recording Industry Association of America after RIAA representatives threatened to interrogate her young daughter if she didn't pay thousands of dollars for music she downloaded from somebody else.

Her amended complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Portland seeks national class-action status for other people allegedly victimized by the industry's anti-piracy campaign and the company it hired, MediaSentry.

The new lawsuit accuses the industry and MediaSentry of spying "by unlicensed, unregistered and uncertified private investigators" who "have illegally entered the hard drives of tens of thousands of private American citizens" in violation of laws "in virtually every state in the country."

The information was used to file "sham" lawsuits intended only as intimidation to further the anti-piracy campaign, the lawsuit said.

Lory Lybeck, attorney for the plaintiff, said the suit is partly aimed at forcing the industry to reveal how extensive the spying had become.

"We're very pleased that we'll finally be able to force the RIAA and MediaSentry to give up secret records they have steadfastly refused to disclose in tens of thousands of cases that they've filed," Lybeck said.

Jonathan Lamy, an industry spokesman, said the new complaint repeats old claims.
"It is unfortunate that this case continues to drag on after the court previously deemed all of Ms. Andersen's claims inadequate," Lamy said. "We hope to resolve the case in short order."

The complaint notes the case began when Andersen, a single mother, was sitting down for dinner with her then 8-year-old daughter at their home in August 2005 and a legal process server knocked on her door with notice of an RIAA lawsuit falsely alleging copyright infringement and demanding penalties.

The lawsuit was dismissed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Ashmanskas and Andersen countersued.

Her complaint is similar to one filed in federal court against the industry by Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers on behalf of the University of Oregon to protect the privacy of university students the RIAA has accused of music piracy.

Stephanie Soden, spokeswoman for Myers, said Friday that the state is monitoring the case.
"We're definitely watching it closely," she said.

Link of the Day - Zombo

I found today’s link of the day while on The Rock House Method Forums. Rock House member zombo has a MySpace site that caught my eye, aside from the skull and cross bones you see when you get to his profile.

While looking at the site I read about how he was in the band called Viper back “in the day”. Mike says “it was the greatest band to never make it out of the tiny village of Fairhope. Mike has also blogged about the history of his old band and has an FAQ about Viper also. While there check out the pictures, there are a few of the old members, art work and some current pictures of Mike performing. Mike also has a second site that has Vipers music on it.

Designed with veteran metal bassist David Ellefson, Peavey Zodiac DE bass guitars are solid rock basses featuring both staggered single coil and straight single coil pickups. "I wanted to create a bass that incorporates the best sound qualities of a traditional instrument but also has cutting-edge features designed for modern players," says Ellefson. "My technique and playing style have always demanded more from a bass guitar to really capture the power and depth of my music. The Zodiac DE brings those elements together in one powerhouse instrument." In the celebrated Peavey tradition, Zodiac basses combine sought-after features with the road-worthy durability required by serious rock players. Like other basses in the Zodiac Series, the David Ellefson signature model—named Scorpio after Ellefson's sign in the astrological zodiac—is built using a solid alder body with sculpted front and back contours and equipped with an articulating bridge with machined saddles. The Scorpio is also outfitted to his specs, including custom Seymour Duncan(R) pickups, a gloss-black finish and a mirrored pickguard. "Rock n' roll is about constant reinvention and taking things to new extremes, and the Zodiac DE reflects my passion for that lifestyle," adds Ellefson. "I like the bass to be heard as well as felt through the music, and after all, what good is a fancy bass if you can't hear it?" Zodiac DE Scorpio basses feature one staggered single coil and one straight single coil pickup, with two master volume controls and one master tone control for shaping the Zodiac sound. Other features include an 8" radius maple neck so players can work into the 21-fret rosewood fingerboard in comfort, plus all-chrome hardware and butterfly tuners.

Cavalera Conspiracy CD Debutes March 25th

Source ING
Max and Iggor Cavalera have reunited for the first time in over a decade. The two brothers will preside over The Cavalera Conspiracy, their new sonic outfit.

The group's debut album, Inflikted, will drop on March 25th, 2008 via Roadrunner Records.

"Cavalera Conspiracy is about a sense of being unleashed," says vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera. "You bottle a monster for 10 years and then let it out. It's explosive, and we waited a long time for this beast to be set free." Following a live onstage reunion back in 2006 Max and Iggor, who hadn't performed since being in Sepultura, decided it was time to re-enter the studio together.

The Cavalera Conspiracy consists of Max Cavalera (vocals/rhythm guitar), Iggor Cavalera (drums/percussion), Marc Rizzo (lead/rhythm guitars), and Joe Duplantier (bass). The band recorded the album over the past summer at Undercity Studios in Los Angeles, with Logan Mader (former Machine Head guitarist) and Lucas Banker of the Dirty Icon production team. Rex Brown (Pantera, Down) cameos on bass on "Ultra-Violent," and "Black Ark" features a collaboration with Max, Joe and Richie Cavalera (Incite) all on vocals.

Taste of Chaos Tour

Source: Francis Petruziello of The Cleaveland Leader.

The Taste of Chaos Tour featuring Rock House Method artist/instructor "Big" Dan Jacobs is in full swing.

The US leg features AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ATREYU, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, BLESSTHEFALL, IDIOT PILOT and JROCK buzzmakers MUCC, D‚ESPAIRSRAY and THE UNDERNEATH.

The multi-artist package in Canada will feature AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ATREYU, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE plus very special guests.

Since muscling their way into the Orange County metal/punk scene in 1998, Atreyu (Alex Varkatzas, vocals; Dan Jacobs, guitar; Travis Miguel, guitar; Marc McKnight, bass; Brandon Saller, drums) have sold over a million albums by constantly challenging themselves and their audience with charged music and acrobatic performances that push the boundaries of catharsis and emotional exorcism. The band's recently released album, Lead Sails Paper Anchor, fueled by the hit single "Becoming The Bull," rocketed onto Billboard's Top 200 debuting at #8 and Billboard's Rock and Hard Rock Album Charts at #1, making it the highest-charting album of the band's career and landing them on the cover of Revolver Magazine, who called the disc "a coffin-tight collection of singles...the potential for hugeness is all over these 11 tunes...," while Metal Hammer declared it "a truly landmark album."

The 90' Lyrics Quiz

The test site states, Warning to Fans of the 80's Quiz . The 90's were complicated. We replaced the bubble-gum catchy tunes like "Mickey" and "Venus" with gods of mumbling angst - Vedder, Cobain - shouting anger - Reznor, Manson - or rapid fire dissonance - Kiedis, Corgan- and that was just the main stream radio hits! Pop continued on, but lyrics overall became much more complex.

Try your hand at how well you know your 90's music lyrics. There's also a link to an 80's lyric quiz also. Post your scores if you dare!

Origins of the name rock and roll

Source Wikipedia

If you wanna rock and roll, you need to know the history. Here it is according to wikipedia.

The first coupling of the words "rock" and "roll" on record came in 1916, in a recording of a spiritual, "The Camp Meeting Jubilee", by an unnamed vocal "quartette" issued by Little Wonder Records. The lyrics include "We've been rocking and rolling in your arms / Rocking and rolling in your arms / In the arms of Moses". In 1922, blues singer Trixie Smith recorded "My Man Rocks Me (with One Steady Roll)", first featuring the two words in a secular context. Twelve years later, The Boswell Sisters had a hit with "Rock and Roll" (1934).
